As the binder and active material are composed of organic matter and graphite with very small compositional difference, distinction of them has been difficult by composition contrast observation using backscattered electrons. Thus, FE-SEMs with a high gun brightness have been used by a voltage contrast observation method under an extremely low accelerating voltage of tens to hundreds of volts. W-SEM observation of the lithium-ion battery negative electrode surface with an SU3800 was tried at its minimum accelerating voltage of 0.3 kV. Figure 1 is the result. Image (a) shows the binder attached to the active material by voltage contrast. Image (b) was obtained at a higher magnification. As indicated by the yellow arrows, localized distribution of the binder was observed with high contrast as aggregating areas or small clusters. Even with the W-SEM SU3800, identification of the binder on the active material was confirmed possible by obtaining high-contrast voltage contrast secondary electron images at the low accelerating voltage of 0.3 kV.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row css_animation=”” row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”full_width” angled_section=”no” text_align=”left” background_image_as_pattern=”without_pattern”][vc_column][vc_column_text]
